PRODUCTION STATEMENT

While Yannis Pelé's incredible story has already been the subject of several reports as it resembles a modern fairy tale, it's the very first time it's told in a long, unprecedented, and hybrid format.

This format chosen by co-directors Alexandre Silva and Morgan Le Faucheur blurs the lines between documentary and fiction. The docu-fiction Beyond Prognosis thus mixes fictional sequences, archival footage filmed by Yannis before and after the accident, interviews with his loved ones, neurophysiology researchers, and members of the medical team who cared for him during his recovery.

Thanks to the multiplicity of perspectives and the emergence of Yannis's voice, the 55 minutes documentary film explores the invisible and the visible, the sayable and the unsayable. Intimate, realistic, moving, the new ALMO Film production brings to the screen the voices of hope, reason, science, love, as echoes of the violence of the diagnosis that strikes a 17-year-old young man, experienced up close or from afar by his loved ones, doctors, and researchers.

SYNOPSIS

Destined for a global career in downhill mountain biking, 17-year-old Yannis Pelé suffers a devastating crash during a competition. The diagnosis is clear-cut: fractured vertebrae and spinal cord damage. Yannis loses the use of his legs and with them, his dream of becoming an athlete. When a childhood dream comes to an abrupt halt, what is left but hope? So, Yannis refuses to give up and holds on tight. It marks the beginning of a race against time. What the medical world doesn't know is that Yannis has luck on his side and unwavering faith in life…
